Inside Our In-House Dental Lab: How It Speeds Up Implant Dentures

When you're considering implant-supported dentures, you probably have questions about more than just the procedure itself. How long will treatment take? How many appointments will you need? What will your new teeth look like, and who will be making them?

An important part of the answer may be something you don't see during a typical dental visit: the dental laboratory.

At Lake Lucerne Family & Implant Dentistry in Orlando, FL, we have an on-site digital dental lab that allows our dentists and laboratory technicians to work together throughout the implant denture process. Since launching our fully digital lab workflow in 2022, we've integrated advanced scanning, design, and fabrication technology to help make treatment more efficient and coordinated.

Here's a closer look at how our in-house lab works and why it matters for patients considering implant-supported dentures.

What Is an In-House Dental Lab?

A dental laboratory is where many custom dental restorations are designed and fabricated. Depending on the treatment, this may include crowns, bridges, dentures, and implant-supported prosthetics.

Traditionally, a dental office may take impressions or scans and send them to an outside laboratory. The lab then creates the restoration and sends it back to the dental practice for fitting and delivery.

This arrangement works well for many patients, but it involves communication and coordination between separate teams.

At Lake Lucerne Family & Implant Dentistry, our onsite lab brings much of that process into the same location. Our dentists, assistants, designers, and lab technicians can collaborate directly, helping keep treatment planning and restoration production connected.

For patients receiving implant-supported dentures, that coordination can be especially valuable.

How Does Digital Technology Improve the Implant Denture Process?

Our in-house lab uses several technologies to support the planning and fabrication of custom restorations.

Intraoral Scanning

Instead of relying solely on traditional impression materials, we use intraoral scanners to capture detailed three-dimensional images of the mouth. These digital scans allow our team to evaluate the teeth and oral structures and review the images with patients during consultations.

For many patients, digital scanning is more comfortable than traditional impressions because it avoids the trays and impression material that can trigger gagging. The detailed images also provide useful information for designing restorations.

Facial Scanning

Designing implant-supported dentures involves more than matching the shape of individual teeth. The restoration also needs to complement the patient's facial features and overall appearance.

Our lab uses three-dimensional facial scanning to create digital representations that help guide treatment planning. These scans can be shared with laboratory technicians to help determine appropriate tooth size, shape, position, and color.

By considering facial proportions alongside the implant plan, the team can work toward a restoration that looks natural and fits the patient's goals.

Computer-Aided Design

Once digital scans and other planning information are collected, our laboratory team can use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create the prosthesis.

The digital design process allows technicians to evaluate the restoration before fabrication. Adjustments can be made to its shape, contours, and other details as needed.

The completed design can then be sent to the appropriate equipment for production.

3D Printing and Milling

Our onsite lab has both 3D printing and milling capabilities.

These technologies allow the team to create different types of dental prosthetics and components based on the patient's treatment plan. Three-dimensional printing can support quicker production and turnaround for certain restorations and revisions, while milling allows the lab to fabricate materials such as zirconia and titanium components.

Having these capabilities in-house gives our team greater control over the design and production process.

Photogrammetry

Implant-supported dentures depend on accurate information about the position of the dental implants. Even small differences in implant positioning can affect how a restoration fits.

Photogrammetry is an advanced scanning technique that captures implant positions with a high degree of precision. This information helps guide the design and fabrication of implant-supported restorations.

Lake Lucerne Family & Implant Dentistry has invested in this technology as part of its digital laboratory workflow.

How Does an In-House Lab Help Speed Up Implant Denture Treatment?

The timeline for implant-supported dentures depends on several factors, including the patient's oral health, treatment complexity, healing, and type of restoration.

However, having the laboratory on-site can help reduce some of the delays associated with sending work to an outside facility.

Because our dentists and lab technicians work in the same location, they can communicate directly about the design and fit of a restoration. If a change is needed, the team can coordinate adjustments without waiting for an outside laboratory to receive and process a request.

Our lab can also prepare immediate prosthetics in advance for certain All-on-4 implant cases. This planning may allow eligible patients to receive a temporary set of teeth on the day of their procedure rather than going without teeth during the healing period.

It's important to understand that immediate prosthetics are not the same as final restorations. Patients still need time to heal, and the final denture is typically completed according to the treatment plan after the appropriate healing period.

The advantage is that the team can coordinate these stages more closely.

Why Does Having the Lab Under One Roof Matter?

Fewer outside referrals and more coordinated appointments are convenient, but the benefits go beyond scheduling.

Direct communication: The dentist and lab technician can discuss a restoration together, making it easier to address questions or changes during production.

Continuity of care: The same practice team can oversee planning, design, fabrication, delivery, and ongoing maintenance.

More efficient adjustments: If a prosthetic needs refinement, the team can coordinate the next steps without relying entirely on an outside laboratory.

Personalized design: Digital scanning and design technology help the team consider each patient's facial features, implant positions, and aesthetic preferences.

A more connected experience: Patients can receive more of their treatment in one location instead of traveling between multiple providers for different stages of care.

These advantages are particularly helpful when treatment involves replacing most or all of the teeth with implant-supported dentures.

Are Implant-Supported Dentures Right for You?

Implant-supported dentures can be an option for patients missing several or all of their teeth who want more stability than traditional removable dentures provide.

However, candidacy depends on several factors, including jawbone health, gum health, medical history, and the number and position of implants needed.

During your consultation, our dental team can evaluate your oral health, discuss your goals, and explain which tooth replacement options may be appropriate. Some patients may need preparatory procedures, such as extractions or bone grafting, before implant placement.

We also offer All-on-4 and other implant-supported solutions, with treatment plans customized to individual needs.
