Advantages of CEREC vs. Traditional Crowns

When you are having trouble with your teeth, the last thing you want is to make multiple trips to the dentist instead of getting everything done in one single visit. At our practice, CEREC technology allows you to restore your teeth with a same-day crown, saving time while getting better results.

CEREC is short for "CEramic REConstruction". It uses CAD/CAM (computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing) technology to take impressions rapidly and generate a precisely fitted restoration on the same day. Traditionally, these procedures require at least two trips to the dentist, up to two weeks apart. While you wait for lab work to return, the doctor will place a provisional crown (which translates to extra time, extra costs).

What is the CEREC process like?

The process for preparing CEREC crowns is more comfortable and results are typically longer-lasting. Instead of gooey impressions made of putty, we use digital (3D) impressions to make an accurate mold for the crown. The digital images are transmitted to the CAD/CAM machine, for the doctor to initiate a precise design within minutes. Having control over the shape, size and color of crowns, dentists can ensure a natural look & feel for all CEREC patients. CEREC uses a single block of solid ceramic materials instead of pressed ceramic and metal. CEREC restorations are able to withstand moderate chewing so crowns will last for up to 15 years (longer than similar work with traditional methods). The color of CEREC ceramic is closer to the color of natural teeth, and CEREC crowns lack a metal core, which means your restoration will be virtually unnoticeable.
